Kenong Rimba Park

Kenong Rimba Reserve is a rare find. Much of Malaysia's lowland forests have been or are in the midst of being cleared for urban development and palm oil plantations. However, there are several splotches of primary jungle that has been retained for the specific purpose of fauna and flora research.

Covering an area of 121 sq kilometres in the Kenong Valley, Kenong Rimba Park lies in the south-west of Taman Negara. Within the park are some magnificent limestone caves. The sense of tranquility and quiet solitude are broken only by the chirping of birds and the cascading waterfalls.

At Kenong Rimba Park, Pahang, you will be able to sight some unique and beautiful varieties of orchids that hang on to the bigger trees, drawing nourishment from them. You can also come across the tallest recorded tree of the tropical rainforest known as the Tualang in this park. Besides the profuse growth of the huge ficus tree, you can also get to see the pink and white water lilies growing in abundance.

Belum Forest Reserve

Northern Peninsula Malaysia (Perak state), lies a vast area of virgin jungle known as the Belum Forest Reserve. The area is one of the largest untouched forest reserves in Peninsula Malaysia. The presence of large mammal species such as elephants, rhinoceroses, tapirs and tigers makes Belum very special.

This forest possesses an immense wealth of flora and fauna with much of the area still unexplored and undisturbed by humans.

Various tour operators now offer guided tours to certain areas of the reserve and will arrange for the necessary permits, river and road transport and accommodation, which may include camping.

The Royal Belum forest is located in the Gerik, Perak, area (Hulu Perak). It is believe that the forest reserve coverage is about 290,000 hectares and with more than 146,000 hectares of virgin forest. The forest is divided into two sections: the upper Belum area, which stretches to the Thai-Malaysian border covering 117,500 hectares of impenetrable jungle and the lower Belum mostly covered by Temenggor Lake. The State of Perak has decided to preserve the Belum and Temenggor forests as a permanent nature reserve for research.

Enjoy the beautiful scenery and the fiery sunset over Temenggor Lake and the ancient limestone hills believe to be 220 million years old. Some of the limestone islands at the southern reaches of the lake were once majestic rock cliffs dating back to 400 million years ago; before the Jurassic era. These are said to be among the oldest outcrops in Malaysia.

(Gimlette, 1939).

Melanochyla fulvinervis Ding Hou
(Rengas)

Theretia peruviana Schum (Bunga Jepun)

Gunung Chamah and Gunung Ulu Sepat

This mountain is remote and unknown to many people. It is located in Belum Forest. Any Malaysians will know that Hutan Belum is still virgin, untouched by the outside world. If you are lost in this Hutan Belum, the nearest civilisation is 40 to 50 kilometers away and that's about 3 days of trek if you walked straight. There are only a handful of people that has sumitted this mountain.

There's abundant supply of flora, high in medicinal value. Aboriginal tribes, called Orang Asli still use this forest as a base for primary living. The only contact to the outside world is a 3 hours boat ride through Temenggur Lake (Tasik Temenggur).

Tasik Temenggur is formed when the government decide to built a dam on a Temenggur River in 1970s. As a result, the forest submerged in water to form the lake. Even now, we can see most of the dead tree coming out of the water, still standing proud. This lake has been a main transport system for the Orang Asli, linking Grik to Pos Kemar.

Gunung Chamah lies in the north-western corner of Kelantan and is the fifth highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia. It is one of the Peninsula's G7 (mountains above 7,000ft/2,134m). Gunung in Malay literally means mountains with an elevation of 1,000 m and above. In Peninsular Malaysia, there are several of these mountains located along the main mountain ranges called the Titiwangsa Range.

The distance between the starting point of trek to the summit is about 45 map square kilometers. The expedition has to be planned carefully. Only experienced guide is able to guide this whole expedition.

Today, jungle trekking and mountaineering is one of the most popular outdoor sports/activities in Malaysia. Thanks to the peace agreement made some 20 years ago, more and more Malaysian youths are opting for this activities as it will be more fun and adventuring as more species of flora and fauna are being discovered in the forest. It is most evident during the holiday seasons that most of the mountain tops in the Peninsular are jammed with hikers and trekkers. Preparations, training and bookings for permits and transport have to be done months ahead.

Gunung Chamah is one of the harder mountains, because of getting there (to the start of the trek) as well as the trek itself. However, it is also one of the best treks , as the place is rather untouched and beautiful. Be careful, as tigers still roam around the treks there.

MVFRA CAMPING & JUNGLE SURVIVAL

Nature Ranger Camp

The objective of setting up this type of training camp is to expose the younger children to natural environment. The type of training camp is held during the school holidays. They are taught, among other things, the following:-

1. Safety and awareness of the environment

2. Love nature and learn to keep the environment clean

3. Develop team-work

4. Create self-confidence

5. Maintain discipline

Kids will learn the proper way in camping, set up camp, learn how to start a fire, cook as well as some basic survival skills in the jungle.

Camping Safety

Here are some helpful tips and information so that you will be well prepared for your camping trip.

  1. Plan your trip so that you arrive at your actual campsite with enough daylight left to check over the entire campsite and to set-up camp.
  2. Be sure to check the site thoroughly for glass, sharp objects, branches that could fall or are hung low.
  3. Check the contour of the land and look for potential trouble due to rain. Check for areas that could flood or become extremely muddy and cause problems.
  4. Look for level with enough room to spread out all your camping gear.
  5. Look for a site that has trees or shrubs on the side of the prevailing winds. This will help block the wind if it should gust or get quite strong.
  6. Check for potential hazards at the campsite such as: poison ivy, bees, ants, sharp objects and other dangerous areas.
  7. Fire is of prime concern at the campsite. Be sure you have an area for a fire that cannot spread laterally or vertically. When ever a fire is lit at the campsite be sure that someone is assigned to watch it at all times. Keep water nearby for emergencies. Be sure that when you put the fire out you use water and soil and be certain that the fire is completely out, cool to the touch. Embers buried within the pile of ashes have a tendency to reignite later.
  8. Keep your campsite fires to an absolute minimum at all times.
  9. Dispose of all trash properly in the proper recycling bins if available.
  10. Return the campsite to its original condition for the next camper if you disturb it in any way.
  11. Don't forget your good recycling habits on vacation. They are just as important camping as they are at home.
  12. RV campers should be extremely careful to travel on proper roads within the site so as not to get stuck. Not all roads within the site are made for an R.V.
  13. Check your R.V. before leaving home, on route, at the campsite upon arrival and before departure for any damage, repairs or maintenance problems.
  14. Make sure everyone in the R.V. is using seat belts whenever possible. That includes passengers as well.
  15. Your holding tanks should be using non-toxic chemicals at all times.

GUIDELINES FOR A SAFE & FUN CAMPING VACATION

Safety Outdoors

  1. Keep first aid supplies and emergency telephone numbers accessible at all times.
  2. Know where the nearest telephone or ranger station is located and if possible, carry a cell phone.
  3. Dress children in several layers of clothing. The inner layer should be a breathable, synthetic material that pulls moisture from the skin.
  4. Remember, a child’s body temperature changes faster than adults.
  5. Check the weather forecast before you leave.
  6. Pack essentials, such as flashlights, extra food, water, and rain gear in case of bad weather.
  7. Make sure sleeping bags are clean, warm and dry.
  8. Inform others where you are camping and when you’ll return.
  9. Teach kids these skills and how to be safe and responsible in the outdoors.

Kenong Rimba Park

An unspoilt tropical forest havens, Kenong Rimba Park nestled amidst the lustful green vegetation offers spectacular adventures for agro and eco-tourism.

The second one, the jungle has slept for 100 million years, undisturbed by the ice-age which covered the northern hemisphere. Here is where the flora and fauna has the opportunity to evolve into exotic and unique species.

Many travellers interested in experiencing the wonders of the rainforest jungle are realising the importance of this relatively untouched, intriguing piece of jungle land possibly with much help from the Lonely Planet, Rough Guide etc. It is not difficult to imagine why. This relatively small (about 128km sq) but significant reserve park shares its northern border with Taman Negara. Thankfully, facilities are kept as basic as possible so that visitors can truly sink into a bit of roughing out at the campsites. There are only 4 basic chalets (2 to each chalet) and a longhouse that can accommodate 60 persons. Water is supplied from nearby streams and there is no electricity supply.

Kenong Rimba Park boasts a complex network of caves, each with its own unique geological formation and fascinating legend. The most captivating is none other than the Gua Batu Tinggi, the habitat of a variety of wild orchids. Some of the more notable caves are Gua Batu Tangga, Gua Batu Tangkup and Gua Batu Telahup.

Each limestone cave is situated about half an hour's trek from each other. The most striking is the Gua Batu Tinggi, which resembles a dug-out boat. The Sungai Kenong River passes though this cave. Local folklore has it that the cave was formed when a boat carrying the King’s messenger from Pekan was turned into stone. This cave is approximately 122 to 152 metres above sea level. Here you can find a variety of plant life that includes orchids, fig trees and epiphytes.
